Ford Mustang Convertible Top Replacement and Repair

The Mustang is one of the most common convertibles on Chicago-area roads, and one of the most common we see at our Alsip shop. Many are summer-only cars that come out of storage in April. Others are daily drivers that handle snow and salt with the top up. Either way, the top eventually needs attention. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has been replacing and repairing Mustang convertible tops since 1977.

Mustang generations we work on

Every Mustang convertible generation has its own top design, frame, and quirks:

If you're not sure which generation you have, give us the year and we'll take it from there.

Common Mustang top problems

Rear window problems. Plastic windows on older tops cloud and crack. Glass windows can separate from the fabric along the bottom edge. Depending on the condition of the rest of the top, we can sometimes replace or rebond the window instead of the whole top.

Leaks at the side windows. On many Mustangs, water at the door glass comes from worn weatherstripping or windows that need adjustment, not the top fabric. We check these before recommending a new top.

Slow or uneven power tops. Mustang power tops depend on a pump and lift cylinders. Weak pumps, leaking cylinders, or low fluid make tops move slowly, stop partway, or rise unevenly. We repair hydraulic systems and adjust frames.

Worn-through fabric at the bows. Over time, the top rubs on the frame bows and pads, and the fabric wears thin in lines across the roof. That's a sign the pads may need replacement along with the top.

Shrinkage and sun damage. Vinyl and cloth both shrink and fade with age. A shrunken top puts stress on seams and latches.

Vinyl or cloth for a Mustang?

Many Mustangs came with vinyl tops, and some later models offered cloth. Vinyl is durable and easy to care for. Cloth has a softer, more upscale look. We'll show you samples for your generation at the estimate so you can choose, whether you want to stay factory-correct or upgrade.

For either look, many Mustang tops we install use Haartz fabric. We'll note the material on your estimate.

Classic Mustang restoration tops

On classic Mustangs, we pay close attention to the details that matter to restorers: the correct grain and color, proper pad and well-liner installation, and a frame that's adjusted before the new top goes on. If you're doing a full restoration, we can also handle the interior. See auto upholstery.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work on classic Mustang convertibles?

Yes. We work on Mustang convertibles from the 1960s classics through the latest models, including classic restorations where originality matters.

How long does a Mustang top replacement take?

Like most convertible tops, a Mustang top installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time. It's not a same-day job, so book ahead.

My Mustang top goes down slowly or unevenly. Is that the top or the hydraulics?

Uneven or slow movement usually points to the power top system, such as the pump, cylinders, or fluid, or to frame adjustment, not the fabric. We diagnose the system before quoting.

Can I get a glass rear window?

It depends on the generation and the top you choose. Many Mustang tops are available with glass rear windows. We'll show you the options for your year.
