Convertible Top Repair: Rear Windows, Hydraulics, Frames, and Leaks
Not every convertible problem needs a new top. A lot of the cars that come into our Alsip shop have a top that's in decent shape and one specific thing that's failed: a back window, a hydraulic cylinder, a seam, a frame that won't latch. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has been repairing convertibles since 1977, and we'll tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement is the better use of your money.
When a full replacement is the better path, many of the tops we install use Haartz fabric. For repair-only jobs we focus on the failed part first; see /warranty for how coverage works on repairs versus new tops.
Rear window repair and replacement
The rear window is usually the first part of a soft top to give out.
Plastic windows yellow, cloud, and crack with age and cold. On many tops, the plastic window can be replaced without replacing the entire top, as long as the surrounding fabric is still healthy.
Glass windows don't fog the same way, but the bond between the glass and the fabric can fail. When the window starts to pull away along the bottom edge, it can often be rebonded before water starts getting in.
We also offer tinted window upgrades on many applications.
Hydraulic and power top repair
Power tops rely on a pump, lift cylinders, hoses, switches, and the frame all working together. When something goes wrong you might see:
- The top stops partway or moves unevenly side to side
- Fluid stains on the rear seat or in the top well
- The pump runs but nothing moves, or the top moves very slowly
- The top won't latch at the windshield header
We diagnose before we replace. Sometimes it's a leaking cylinder. Sometimes it's low fluid or a frame that needs adjustment. Replacing parts by guesswork gets expensive, so we find the cause first.
Frame adjustment and repair
A convertible frame has a lot of pivot points, and small changes add up. Bent linkages, worn bushings, or a frame knocked out of alignment can cause wind noise, leaks at the side windows, and a top that won't latch. We do frame adjustment and repair as a stand-alone job and as part of any top replacement.
Leaks, seams, and weatherstripping
Leaks are the number-one complaint we hear from convertible owners in the spring. The culprit can be:
- Weatherstripping that's flattened, cracked, or pulled loose
- Seams where stitching has rotted from UV exposure
- Side window alignment that no longer meets the top
- Drain channels in the top well that are clogged
We water-test and inspect to find where the water actually comes in, then fix that.
Zippers, binding, and small tears
On tops with zip-out rear windows, zippers wear out. We offer brass zipper upgrades where the design allows. Frayed binding, small tears near the edges, and loose snaps are usually quick repairs if the main fabric is still in good shape.
Repair or replace? How we decide
We'll recommend repair when the main fabric is still flexible and keeps water out, and the problem is limited to one part (window, seam, cylinder, seal).
We'll recommend replacement when the fabric is brittle, shrunk, or torn in several spots, or when the repair would cost a large share of a new top and buy you only a season or two.
You'll get a free estimate either way, and the decision is yours. If replacement makes more sense, see our convertible top replacement page for what's included.
Timing
Small repairs usually take less time than a replacement. Hydraulic diagnosis and frame work depend on parts, and full top replacements take 8 to 12 hours of shop time. Call ahead so we can plan the right amount of time for your car.
Warranty
Repair workmanship is covered free for 90 days. When we replace the top, you get a 3-year materials warranty and a 100% fit guarantee. Want longer coverage? Extended Protection Plans are sold as Standard (12-month), Premium (24-month), and Elite (36-month). Coverage ranges from 3 months to 3 years depending on the service — /warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Can a torn convertible top be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?
Small tears near a seam and separated stitching can sometimes be repaired. If the fabric is brittle, shrunk, or torn in several places, replacement usually lasts longer and costs less over time. We'll show you what we see and give you both options when both make sense.
My power top stopped halfway. Can you fix it?
Yes. We repair convertible hydraulic systems and adjust frames. Common causes include a weak pump, leaking lift cylinders, low fluid, or a frame out of adjustment. We'll diagnose it before recommending parts.
My glass rear window came loose from the top. Can that be fixed?
Often, yes. A glass window that has separated from the fabric can frequently be rebonded if the fabric around it is still in good condition.
Do you repair vinyl roofs on hardtop cars too?
Vinyl top work on hardtop cars is part of our trim work. Call (708) 371-8020 with your year, make, and model and we'll tell you what's involved.
