Corvette Convertible Top Replacement and Repair
Corvette owners care about the details. A wrinkled top, a cloudy back window, or a seam that doesn't line up stands out on a car like that. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has replaced and repaired convertible tops in Alsip since 1977, and we treat Corvettes, classic and modern, with the attention they deserve.
Corvette convertible generations
Corvette has offered convertibles in most generations, but not all of them use a fabric top:
- C1 (1953–1962) and C2 (1963–1967): classic soft tops, often on cars being restored or shown.
- C3 convertibles (1968–1975): the last C3 convertible was the 1975 model. No factory Corvette convertible was built again until 1986.
- C4 convertible (1986–1996): manual soft top. These are old enough now that most need a new top, pads, and weatherstrip.
- C5 convertible (1998–2004) and C6 convertible (2005–2013): common driver-quality convertibles. The C6 offered a power top option.
- C7 convertible (2014–2019): power soft top.
- C8 convertible (2020–present): uses a retractable hardtop, not a fabric top. We can talk with you about interior and trim work on C8s, but there's no soft top to replace.
What we see most on Corvette tops
Rear window issues. Plastic windows on older tops yellow and crack. On tops with glass windows, the bond can let go. If the rest of the top is healthy, a window repair may be enough.
Wind noise and water at the header and side windows. On many Corvettes the top fabric isn't the problem. It's tired weatherstripping or side glass that needs adjustment. We check this before recommending a new top.
Wear at the frame and pads. Fabric wears where it rubs the frame, and pads compress with age. A new top over worn pads won't look right, so we inspect and replace pads when needed.
Power top problems on later cars. On C6 power tops and C7s, slow or incomplete movement can come from the hydraulic or electrical side. We diagnose before we start replacing parts. See convertible top repair.
Classic Corvettes: getting it right
On C1, C2, and C3 cars, owners often care about originality: correct material, color, grain, and how the top looks with the car closed up. Tell us how the car will be used (driver, local shows, or judged events) and we'll talk through the options and the details that matter for your year. We'll also look at the frame and its adjustment before installing, because a classic frame that's out of adjustment will show in the finished top.
Vinyl or cloth?
Depending on the year, Corvette tops have been offered in vinyl and in cloth. We'll show you what fits your car and what each material looks like, and you choose. If you want to stay factory-correct, we'll help you get there.
Corvette tops we install often use Haartz fabric in vinyl or cloth. We'll show samples for your generation at the estimate.
Doing the interior too?
Many Corvette owners pair a new top with interior work: seats, carpet, or door panels. Since we do both convertible tops and auto upholstery in the same shop, we can quote it together and do it in one visit.
Planning ahead
- Top installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time and isn't a same-day job.
- Book before spring if your Corvette is in winter storage, since our spring schedule fills quickly.
- Plan for break-in. A new top needs time to relax into shape. We'll give you break-in and care instructions when you pick up the car.
Warranty
A new Corvette top carries a 3-year materials warranty plus a 100% fit guarantee. Workmanship on repairs is covered for 90 days at no charge. Coverage ranges from 3 months to 3 years depending on the service. See /warranty for Extended Protection Plans.

Frequently asked questions
Which Corvettes have a soft top you can replace?
Soft-top Corvette convertibles include the C1 and C2, the C3 through 1975, and the C4, C5, C6, and C7 convertibles. The C8 convertible uses a retractable hardtop rather than a fabric top.
Do you do concours-correct tops for classic Corvettes?
We work on classic Corvettes and will talk with you about the correct material, color, and details for your year. If you're building toward judging, tell us up front so we can plan the job around it.
How long will my Corvette be in the shop for a top?
A convertible top installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time. It's not a same-day job, so we'll schedule it in advance.
