Convertible Tops and Upholstery for Hammond, Munster, and Highland
The Indiana communities just across the state line, Hammond, Munster, Highland, Whiting, and East Chicago, are closer to Alsip than many people think. For drivers in these towns, the trip west on I-80/94 to the Tri-State is often shorter than heading deeper into Indiana. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has served customers on both sides of the line since 1977. This page covers the lakeshore and border towns specifically. For all of Lake County and beyond, see our Northwest Indiana page.
Lakefront and inland boating
These towns sit right on the water. Whiting's lakefront, the Hammond marina, and Wolf Lake, which straddles the Illinois–Indiana line, put boats in a lot of driveways. Lake Michigan boating is especially hard on upholstery and canvas. There's wind, spray, and strong sun reflected off open water, followed by long winter storage.
What we do for border-town boaters:
- Recover seats and cushions in marine-grade vinyl
- Replace waterlogged foam and rotted wooden seat bases
- Replace marine carpet
- Make covers and bimini tops, and repair canvas, snaps, zippers, and windows
See boat upholstery and boat covers and canvas. Bring removable pieces in after haul-out and they'll be ready for spring.
Industry and contractor fleets
The refineries, steel, rail, and logistics operations along this stretch of the lakeshore depend on contractors and fleets whose trucks, vans, and equipment seats wear out quickly. We repair and replace seats, rebuild foam, repair frames with welding, and install carpet and vinyl mats. B2B partners receive discounted rates. See fleet seat repair and forklift and tractor seats.
Convertibles and classics
Munster and Highland have plenty of convertibles and garage-kept classics. We replace tops and rear windows, repair power top hydraulics, and build classic interiors. See convertible top replacement and classic car interiors.
Everyday interiors
Daily commutes on the Borman and Cline Avenue take their toll on driver's seats, and summer heat brings down headliners. We replace worn seat panels, recover full seats, and replace headliners. See auto upholstery and headliner replacement.
Getting here from the border towns
- I-80/94 west to the Tri-State (I-294), then to Cicero Avenue
- Check live traffic, since the Borman can back up at rush hour.
- We're on Central Time, the same as Lake County.
Our shop: 11937 S. Cicero Ave, Alsip, IL 60803, open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Save the trip: send photos
Before you drive over, send photos and details. For boats, include the boat's make and length. For fleets, include a seat count. For convertibles, include year, make, and model and a photo of the rear window. We'll quote first so you only make one trip.
Commuter cars on the Borman
If you commute into Illinois every day, your car racks up miles quickly, and the driver's seat shows it. We replace single worn panels rather than recovering the whole seat whenever we can, and single-panel repairs usually take much less time than a full recover. If your commute also means long hours in traffic, ask about adding seat heaters or lumbar support while the seat is apart.
Motorcycles along the lakeshore
Riders who cruise the lakeshore and the Indiana Dunes area put long hours on their seats. We rebuild packed-down foam, reshape seats for comfort, and recover them in leather, vinyl, or suede. Bring just the seat. See motorcycle seats.
