Forklift, Tractor, and Equipment Seat Repair
On a forklift or tractor, the operator's seat gets used every shift, in every kind of condition. Covers split, foam collapses, and frames crack. A worn seat makes long shifts harder on operators and can make the machine look neglected. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops repairs and replaces equipment seats at our Alsip shop. It's part of the commercial and fleet work we've done for decades for Chicago-area construction, industrial, and transportation businesses.
Equipment we work on
- Forklifts and warehouse equipment
- Tractors (farm and landscape)
- Construction and industrial equipment
- Utility vehicles, mowers, and other seated machinery
Common equipment seat problems
- Split or torn covers, especially along the front edge where operators climb on and off
- Collapsed foam that leaves the operator sitting on the seat pan
- Water-soaked cushions on equipment stored outdoors
- Cracked or broken seat frames and pans
- Worn or damaged track assemblies
What we do
- Recover seats in heavy-duty vinyl
- Rebuild or replace foam
- Repair seat frames, including frame welding
- Repair track assemblies
- Make custom covers for equipment protection
Bring in just the seat
For most equipment, it's faster and cheaper to unbolt the seat and bring it to us than to haul the whole machine. A few tips:
- Photograph the mounting and any wiring (some seats have operator-presence switches) before you remove it.
- Keep the hardware together with the seat.
- If you have a spare seat, the machine can stay in service while we work.
Why rebuild instead of buying a new seat?
Many equipment seats have solid frames and suspensions that outlast the cushion. When that's the case, recovering and refoaming the existing seat keeps the original fit and mounting. It also avoids hunting for an exact-match replacement. If a frame is cracked, we can often weld and repair it. We'll tell you if a seat is beyond saving.
Materials for hard use
Equipment seats face rain, sun, mud, grease, and freezing temperatures. Heavy-duty vinyl is usually the right choice. It sheds water, wipes clean, and resists wear. We stock a wide range of cloth and vinyl types, so many repairs don't wait on special-order material.
For fleets and operations
If your operation runs multiple machines, we can:
- Quote from photos of each seat
- Batch repairs so seats come in and go back on a predictable schedule
- Set up B2B rates for ongoing work
For trucks, vans, utility vehicles, and police and municipal fleets, see fleet seat repair.
Signs a seat should come out of service
Operators may put up with a worn seat, but some problems shouldn't wait:
- A seat that rocks, shifts, or slides unexpectedly
- Cracked frames or broken mounting points
- Exposed springs or edges that can cut or snag
- A damaged operator-presence switch area
Agricultural and landscape seats
Tractors and mowers used for landscaping and farm work often sit outside, so seats deal with sun, rain, and freezing nights. UV makes vinyl brittle, and water gets into the foam through even small cracks. Recovering seats before the season starts, in late winter, keeps operators comfortable and keeps small cracks from turning into soaked, crumbling cushions. If you run a landscaping company with several machines, bring the seats in together during the off-season.
What affects the estimate
Every seat is different, so we quote after seeing photos or the seat itself. The main factors are the seat's size and shape, whether foam needs replacing, and whether the frame or tracks need repair or welding.

Frequently asked questions
Can I bring just the seat instead of the forklift or tractor?
Yes, and for most equipment that's the easiest way. Unbolt the seat, bring it to our shop, and keep the machine working with a spare if you have one.
Do you repair broken seat frames?
Yes. We repair seat frames, including frame welding, as well as track assemblies.
What material do you use for equipment seats?
Usually heavy-duty vinyl, because it handles weather, grease, and constant use and cleans easily. We stock over 1,000 cloth and vinyl material types.
