Jeep Wrangler Soft Top Replacement and Repair

Jeep Wranglers are built to live outdoors, and the soft top takes the abuse first. Chicago summers bake the fabric. Winter folding, road salt, and trail dust finish the job. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops installs and repairs Jeep Wrangler soft tops at our Alsip shop. We're in our 49th year in business, and soft-top work has been part of what we do since 1977.

Wrangler generations we commonly see

If you're not sure which generation you have, the model year on the door sticker is enough for us to start.

What fails on a Wrangler soft top

Cloudy or cracked windows. Side and rear plastic windows yellow, haze, and split, especially when the top is folded in cold weather. On some kits the window panels zip out and can be replaced without a full top. On others, the window is built into the cover.

Worn fabric at folds and bows. Soft tops crease in the same places every time they go down. Those fold lines thin out, then leak. Rub marks over the bows are another early warning that pads or the cover need attention.

Zippers and window channels. Sand and grit chew through zippers on trail-driven Jeeps. Sticky or separated zippers let wind and water in even when the main fabric still looks decent.

Door surrounds and seals. Leaks at the upper doors often come from worn surrounds or misaligned door skins, not a hole in the roof. We check those before recommending a full cover.

Hardware and latches. Bent bows, tired latches, and missing retainers keep a new top from sealing. A fabric-only install on bad hardware is a short-term fix.

Full kit vs. fabric-only

Some owners need a complete soft top kit: cover, windows, and the hardware that came with their setup. Others only need a new fabric cover because the frame and bows are still straight and latch cleanly. We'll inspect before we quote so you're not buying hardware you don't need, and so a new cover isn't fighting a bent bow.

If your Jeep spends half the year under a hardtop, the soft top still needs to be stored clean and dry, not jammed wet behind the seats. Bring it in before the season you actually use it.

Materials and Haartz fabric

Many of the soft tops and convertible covers we install use Haartz topping fabric, a material used across the industry for vinyl and cloth tops. At the estimate we'll show you what's available for your Wrangler year and how vinyl and cloth compare for cleaning, cold-weather folding, and the look you want. For a broader material comparison, see vinyl vs. cloth convertible tops.

Repair or replace?

We'll recommend a targeted repair when the main cover is still flexible and the problem is limited to a window panel, zipper, or seal. We'll recommend a new cover or kit when the fabric is brittle, torn at several folds, or shrunk so the latches won't pull down cleanly. Either way you get a free estimate and a clear recommendation. Related top work for other convertibles is covered on our convertible top replacement and convertible top repair pages.

Timing

A Wrangler soft top installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time depending on the vehicle and the kit. It is not a same-day job. Spring fills up quickly once the weather turns, so book ahead if you want the Jeep ready for weekend drives.

Warranty

Every repair includes a free 90-day workmanship warranty. Soft tops and convertible tops carry a 3-year materials warranty and a 100% fit guarantee. Extended Protection Plans are available in Standard (12 months), Premium (24 months), and Elite (36 months). Coverage ranges from 3 months to 3 years depending on the service. See /warranty for details.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install Jeep Wrangler soft tops?

Yes. We install soft tops and fabric kits for Wrangler generations including TJ, JK, and JL. Bring the year and a photo of your current top so we can confirm the right kit.

Can you replace only the fabric if my frame is fine?

Often, yes. Many Wrangler owners need a new fabric cover and windows while the existing frame and hardware are still sound. We'll inspect the frame, bows, and latches before quoting a fabric-only job.

How long does a Wrangler soft top installation take?

Plan on 8 to 12 hours of shop time depending on the vehicle and whether hardware, windows, or seals are part of the job. It is not a same-day install, so book ahead.

Vinyl or cloth for a Jeep soft top?

Both show up on Wranglers depending on the kit and generation. We'll show you material options for your year and talk through how you use the Jeep (daily driver, trail, summer-only).
