BMW Convertible Top Replacement and Repair
BMW convertibles are built to be driven, and their soft tops are more complicated than most. Many have power mechanisms, glass rear windows, and tight tolerances where the top meets the side glass. When something goes wrong, you want a shop that understands the whole system. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has been replacing and repairing convertible tops in Alsip since 1977, and BMWs are a regular part of our work.
BMW soft-top models we commonly see
- 3 Series convertibles (E30, E36, E46): classic BMW soft tops, many on their second or third top.
- 2 Series convertible (F23): soft top, still relatively young but seeing wear on daily drivers.
- Z3 and Z4 (E85/E86 era roadsters): fabric tops, often driven top-down all summer.
- 6 Series convertibles (E64, F12): larger soft tops with more complex mechanisms.
- Newer soft-top models like the G29 Z4 and G23 4 Series convertible.
Some BMW convertibles use a retractable hardtop instead of fabric, including the E93 3 Series, the F33 4 Series, and the E89 Z4. There's no soft top to replace on those, but we're happy to talk with you about seals and interior work.
Common BMW top issues
Glass rear window separation. Many BMW tops have a heated glass rear window bonded to the fabric. When that bond fails, the window pulls away along the bottom and water gets in. If the top is otherwise in good shape, rebonding may be possible.
Hydraulic and power-top faults. Slow, jerky, or stalled tops often trace back to the hydraulic pump, leaking cylinders, or an out-of-adjustment frame. Leaking fluid can also stain the interior. We diagnose before replacing parts. See convertible top repair.
Fabric wear and shrinkage. Cloth tops fade, wear at the frame contact points, and can shrink with age, which strains seams and makes latching difficult.
Water at the side windows. Often caused by window alignment or worn weatherstripping, not the top. We check this first so you don't pay for a top that won't fix the leak.
Cloth tops and care
Most BMW soft tops are cloth. A good cloth top has a deep, matte look and holds up well if you care for it:
- Brush off dirt and debris regularly.
- Clean with products made for cloth convertible tops.
- Re-apply a fabric protectant periodically to help it shed water.
- Avoid automatic car washes with brushes.
We'll show you material options at the estimate, including colors that match or complement your interior.
Many BMW cloth tops we install use Haartz fabric. We'll confirm the material when we quote your model.
Getting the fit right
BMW tops are designed to seal tightly against the side glass and windshield header. A good installation includes checking frame adjustment, pads, cables, and seals so the new top fits properly, latches easily, and stays quiet at highway speed. That inspection is part of every top replacement we do. See convertible top replacement.
Scheduling
Top installations take 8 to 12 hours of shop time, so they're not same-day jobs. If you store your BMW over the winter, consider booking the top before the spring rush.
Before you bring it in
Note when the problem happens (top going up, down, or both), any warning messages on the dash, and where you see water after rain. A short phone video of the top cycling is very helpful for power-top problems.
Warranty
BMW soft top replacements include a 3-year materials warranty and a 100% fit guarantee. Repair workmanship is covered free for 90 days. Coverage ranges from 3 months to 3 years depending on the service. Extended Protection Plans are explained on /warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work on BMW power tops?
Yes. We repair convertible hydraulic systems and adjust frames, and we'll diagnose a BMW power top that's slow, stuck, or uneven before recommending parts.
Can you replace the top on my BMW with a retractable hardtop?
Several BMW convertibles, like the E93 3 Series, F33 4 Series, and E89 Z4, use a retractable hardtop instead of a fabric top. Those don't have a soft top to replace. Call us about seals, trim, or interior work on those models.
Is cloth the right material for my BMW?
Most BMW soft tops came from the factory in cloth, and that's what most owners choose. We'll show you options for your model.
How long does it take?
Convertible top installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time. We'll schedule it in advance.
