Dealer vs. Independent Shop: Who Should Replace Your Convertible Top?
When a convertible top wears out, most owners consider two options: take it back to the dealership, or take it to an independent trim and upholstery shop. Both can be the right answer. It depends on your car, its warranty status, and what matters most to you.
We're an independent shop. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops in Alsip has been doing convertible tops since 1977, so we have a point of view. We've tried to keep this guide fair, because the right choice really does depend on your situation.
When the dealer makes sense
Your car is under factory warranty and the problem might be covered. If your top or power mechanism has failed on a newer car, start with the dealer. A covered repair is hard to beat.
There's an open recall or service bulletin. Dealers handle manufacturer recalls. If there's a known issue with your top system, the dealer is the place to go.
You want an OEM part specifically. Dealers typically quote factory replacement parts. Some owners prefer that, especially on newer cars or for resale.
Complex electronics are involved. On some newer cars, the top is tied into body control modules and sensors. Diagnosis may need manufacturer software. Ask any shop, dealer or independent, how they handle it.
When an independent shop makes sense
Your car is out of warranty. Once warranty coverage is behind you, you can choose based on experience, options, and value.
You want material or color options. Independent trim shops can usually offer a wider range of replacement tops in vinyl and cloth from several manufacturers, and they can explain the differences in person with samples.
Your car is older or classic. Factory parts for older convertibles may be limited or no longer available. Trim shops work with aftermarket tops built for older models and are used to adjusting older frames, pads, and well liners.
You want repair options, not just replacement. A trim shop can often replace just a rear window, rebond a glass window, fix a seam, or repair a hydraulic cylinder when the rest of the top is sound. See convertible top repair.
You want the rest of the interior done too. Trim shops can handle seats, headliners, and carpet in the same visit.
Questions to ask either one
| Question | Why it matters | |---|---| | Who does the installation, in-house or subcontracted? | You want to know who's responsible for the fit. | | Which top manufacturer and material are you quoting? | Material and design affect look, fit, and lifespan. | | Is the rear window included? Plastic or glass? | It's often the most expensive part. | | Do you check pads, cables, seals, and frame? | These decide whether the new top fits and seals. | | How do you diagnose leaks and power-top problems? | Avoids paying for parts you don't need. | | What's the warranty, in writing? | Workmanship and parts may be covered differently. | | How long will you need the car? | Top installs are usually drop-off jobs. |
What drives the cost (either way)
We're not going to quote numbers in a blog post. Prices depend too much on the car and the parts. These are the factors that move the price at any shop:
- The vehicle, including whether the top is manual or power and how complex the frame is
- The top itself: manufacturer, material (vinyl or cloth), and rear window type
- Related parts: pads, cables, weatherstripping, hydraulic components
- Frame or mechanism repairs found during inspection
- Labor time. At Don's, a top installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time.
The best way to compare is to get written quotes that list the same items, then compare line by line.
Timing
Ask both about scheduling. In Chicagoland, spring is the busiest season for convertible work. If your car is in winter storage, getting quotes in winter gives you more choice of dates.
Our take
If your car is under warranty and the issue could be covered, go to the dealer first. If it's out of warranty, older, or you want options, an experienced independent trim shop is worth a call. Get at least two written quotes and compare what's included.

Frequently asked questions
Will using an independent shop void my car's warranty?
Generally, using an independent shop for repairs doesn't void your whole vehicle warranty. Coverage for a specific part can depend on the part and the cause of the problem. If your car is still under factory warranty and the top issue might be covered, check with the dealer first.
Are aftermarket convertible tops as good as factory tops?
Quality varies by manufacturer and material. Many aftermarket tops are made with well-known topping fabrics and designed to match factory fit. Ask the shop which brand and material they're quoting and why.
Do dealers install convertible tops themselves?
Practices vary. Some dealers do the work in-house and some send it out to a trim shop. Ask who will actually do the installation.
