Sunroof Repair, Leaks, Seals, and Drain Service

A sunroof that drips on your shoulder after rain is more than an annoyance. Left alone, that water stains the headliner, rusts the tracks, and soaks the carpet at the feet of the front seats. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has been fixing sunroof leaks and the interior damage they cause at our Alsip shop since 1977. We're in our 49th year in business. We focus on finding where the water actually enters, then fixing that, instead of guessing at the glass.

How sunroof leaks usually start

On most cars, the sunroof glass sits in a tray with drain tubes at the corners. When the roof is closed, rain that gets past the outer seal is supposed to run into that tray and out through the tubes. Problems start when:

We water-test and inspect before we recommend parts. A clogged drain is a different job from a failed seal, and both are different from a cracked glass panel.

Drain cleaning and inspection

Clearing the drains is often the first and most important step. We locate each tube, flush or carefully clear the blockage, and confirm water exits under the car where it should. On many vehicles the tubes run down the A-pillars or C-pillars, so a clog shows up as a wet pillar trim or a damp footwell long before you notice a drip from the glass itself.

If you've been fighting a mystery leak with no crack in the glass, start here. Many owners replace seals or glass when the drains were the real problem.

Seals, weatherstripping, and glass seating

When the outer seal is hard, split, or no longer springy, water gets past it in volume. We replace sunroof seals and related weatherstripping when they're worn, and we check that the glass sits evenly in the opening. A panel that's high on one corner or low at the trailing edge will leak no matter how new the seal is.

Manual pop-up sunroofs, sliding glass roofs, and larger panoramic setups each have their own seal layouts. Bring the year, make, and model so we can talk through what's typical for your car.

Mechanisms that stick or grind

A sunroof that hesitates, chatters, or stops partway usually has a track or cable issue. Dirt packed into the tracks, dried-out lubricant, or stretched cables can all cause that. We clean and lubricate tracks when that's enough, and we diagnose further when the glass still won't cycle smoothly. If a motor or cable set needs more than we can source for your model, we'll say so up front.

When the headliner has already paid the price

Sunroof leaks and sagging headliners often show up together. Water softens the foam behind the fabric, leaves brown rings around the opening, and can drop the headliner onto the sunshade. Once the leak is stopped, we can replace the headliner and recover the sunshade so the cabin looks right again. Doing the headliner first without fixing the leak only means you'll do it twice.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my sunroof leaking even though the glass looks fine?

Most sunroof leaks come from clogged drains, worn seals, or misaligned glass, not a cracked panel. Water that should run out through the tubes overflows into the headliner or A-pillars. We check drains and seals before talking about glass.

Can you fix a sunroof that won't open or close?

Often, yes. Stuck or noisy sunroofs can come from tracks that need cleaning and lubrication, worn cables, or a glass panel that's out of adjustment. We'll inspect the mechanism and tell you what's involved.

Do you replace sunroof glass?

We handle seal, drain, and trim-related sunroof work and the interior pieces that get wet when a sunroof leaks. For a shattered glass panel, we'll tell you what we can do in-house and what needs a glass specialist.

Will a sunroof leak ruin my headliner?

It can. Water that sits in the headliner foam causes stains, odor, and sagging. If the headliner is already damaged, we can replace it after the leak is fixed. See our headliner page for how that work is done.
