Gym Equipment Upholstery: Benches, Machine Pads, and Bike Seats
In a gym, torn upholstery is more than an eyesore. Members notice split benches right away, exposed foam soaks up sweat and can't be cleaned properly, and a ripped pad can make good equipment look unsafe. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops recovers fitness equipment from our shop in Alsip for commercial gyms, studios, schools, and home gyms. It's often the fastest and least expensive way to make a gym floor look sharp again.
Equipment we recover
- Flat, incline, and adjustable benches
- Weight machine pads: seat pads, back pads, leg and roller pads, and arm pads
- Exercise bike seats
- Stretching tables and mats with upholstered tops
- Locker room and studio benches
Why gym pads fail
Fitness upholstery deals with sweat, constant cleaning, and heavy, repetitive use. The common failures are:
- Seam splits where people sit down and push off
- Cracked vinyl from frequent wipe-downs with strong cleaners
- Tears from equipment contact, like a barbell or plate edge
- Compressed foam that bottoms out and feels hard
- Water-damaged bases, when moisture gets through a tear into a wood base
How we recover a pad
- Remove the old cover and inspect the base and foam.
- Repair or replace the base if moisture has damaged a wood backing.
- Replace foam if it has compressed or broken down.
- Cut and sew a new cover in commercial-grade vinyl and fit it tightly to the base.
- Ready to bolt back on.
Materials that handle sweat and cleaning
Gym equipment needs a cover that wipes clean easily and holds up to frequent disinfecting. Commercial-grade vinyl is the standard choice. Tell us what cleaning products your staff or members use so we can account for them. If you want your equipment to carry your brand colors, send a photo or swatch and we'll show you the closest matches from our stock.
Repair vs. new equipment
A worn pad doesn't mean the machine is finished. Frames, cables, and weight stacks usually last for years. Recovering the pads restores appearance and hygiene for a fraction of what new equipment costs, and keeps reliable machines on the floor.
Scheduling for busy gyms
- Do a few machines at a time so members always have options.
- Drop off pads during slow hours and reinstall them when they're done.
- Plan around peak seasons. Gyms are busiest in January. Recovering pads in the fall or early winter means the floor looks its best when new members arrive.

Preventive tips for gym owners
- Encourage members to wipe equipment with approved cleaners, not harsh chemicals.
- Replace torn pads quickly. Once foam is exposed, it absorbs sweat and breaks down faster.
- Check for loose bolts that let pads shift and wear unevenly.
- Keep plates and bars off upholstered surfaces.
What to send for an estimate

Home gyms
Home gym equipment wears out too, especially benches used daily. We recover home benches and pads the same way we do commercial equipment.

Frequently asked questions
Can you recover the pads without replacing the machine?
Yes. Most gym pads are a wood or plastic base with foam and a vinyl cover. We replace the cover and foam as needed and reuse the base when it's sound, so the machine stays in service.
Do you work on home gym equipment?
Yes. We recover benches and pads for home gyms as well as commercial facilities.
How do I get pads to you?
Most pads unbolt from the machine. Remove them, bring them to our shop, and we'll recover them. For larger quantities, call to plan a schedule.
Can you match our brand colors?
We stock over 1,000 cloth and vinyl material types, so we can usually get close to your colors. Send a photo or swatch and we'll show you options.
