Auto Carpet Replacement: Custom-Made and Factory-Molded Sets
Carpet is the part of a car interior everyone steps on and nobody thinks about until it's worn through at the driver's heel, stained beyond saving, or soaked from a leak. Replacing it is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make to a tired interior. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has installed auto carpet in Alsip since 1977, in everything from daily drivers to full classic restorations.
Two ways to replace carpet
Factory-molded carpet sets
Molded carpet is pre-formed to match the contours of your floor pan, including the transmission tunnel, footwells, and seat mounting areas. For many common vehicles, a molded set is the closest match to how the car left the factory, and it gives a clean, tight fit.
Custom-made carpet
For some cars, a molded set isn't available or isn't the right choice. That includes rare classics, cars with modified floors or custom consoles, and projects where the owner wants a specific material or color. In those cases we cut, sew, and fit carpet to the car in our shop. Custom carpet is also how we handle trunk areas and unusual spaces.
Signs your carpet is due
- Worn through at the driver's heel pad or under the pedals
- Stains that don't come out with cleaning
- Odors that keep coming back, often a sign of moisture in the padding
- Water damage from a leak, a flood, or an open window in a storm
- Faded or brittle carpet on older cars, especially convertibles that see a lot of sun
- A restoration where everything else is new and the old carpet would stand out
Find the leak first
If your carpet has been wet, we'll want to know why. Common sources include:
- Convertible tops and their drains, especially at the rear of the car
- Door and window seals
- Windshield seals
- Clogged drains at the cowl or around the top well
- Holes in the floor pan on older cars
New carpet over wet padding or an active leak will smell and stain again. If the leak is from a convertible top, we can address it in the same shop. See convertible top repair.
What a carpet replacement involves
Replacing carpet means removing the seats, console, sill plates, and trim panels that hold the carpet in place. We remove the old carpet and padding, check the floor for rust or moisture, install new padding where needed, then fit the new carpet and reinstall everything. Because the seats are already out, carpet replacement is a good time to address worn seat panels or add seat heaters.
Work vehicles and fleets
Work trucks and fleet vehicles take a beating from boots, mud, and salt. Besides carpet replacement, we install custom vinyl mats that are easier to clean in vehicles that see heavy daily use. See fleet seat repair.
Pair it with other interior work
Carpet often gets replaced as part of a bigger refresh. While the interior is apart, it's efficient to handle:
- Seat repairs or full recovers (auto upholstery)
- A sagging headliner (headliner replacement)
- A full classic interior (classic car interiors)
Choosing color and material
For many vehicles, we can get carpet in the original color. For classics, we'll help you find the right style. Some cars originally had loop carpet, others cut pile. If you want a change, bring the car in and we'll show you options against your seats and trim.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between molded and custom-made carpet?
Molded carpet is pre-formed to the shape of your vehicle's floor, much like the factory original. Custom-made carpet is cut, sewn, and fitted to the car in the shop, which is useful for classics, modified floors, or vehicles without an available molded set.
My carpet got wet. Do I need new carpet?
Not always, but wet padding under the carpet holds water and can lead to odors and mildew. Just as important is finding where the water came from. Replacing carpet without fixing the leak only buys time.
Do you install carpet in work trucks and fleet vehicles?
Yes. We do carpet replacement and custom vinyl mat installation for work vehicles.
