Volkswagen Beetle and Cabriolet Convertible Top Replacement
Volkswagen has built some of the friendliest convertibles on the road, from the classic air-cooled Beetle cabriolet to the VW Cabriolet of the 1980s and '90s and the modern Beetle convertibles. Each has its own top design. Don's Auto Interiors & Tops has replaced convertible tops in Alsip since 1977, and we see Volkswagens of every era.
Volkswagen convertibles we work on
- Classic Beetle cabriolet (air-cooled, through 1980): a thickly padded, multi-layer top that folds into a tall stack behind the rear seat. Fitting one well is a craft. The layers, padding, and frame all have to work together. Our online catalog lists parts for classic Beetles.
- VW Cabriolet / Cabrio (1980s–early 2000s): based on the Rabbit and later Golf, with a fixed roll bar. Many are on their second or third top.
- New Beetle convertible (2000s): a power or manual top depending on trim. Rear windows and seals are common concerns as these cars age.
- Beetle convertible (2010s): a more modern top, often with a glass rear window.
Tell us your year and model and we'll confirm the right top for your car.
Classic Beetle tops: why they're different
The classic Beetle cabriolet top is famously thick. Underneath the outer fabric there's padding and a headliner, which makes the car quiet and warm for a convertible of its era but more involved to replace. Getting a classic Beetle top to sit tight with clean lines takes attention to:
- Frame condition and adjustment, since worn pivots show up as wrinkles and poor latching
- Padding and headliner, which are often replaced along with the outer top
- Tack strips, which on older cars may no longer hold well
- The rear window, usually glass on later cars and small on earlier ones
Common issues on newer VW convertibles
Leaks. Often from seals, window adjustment, or clogged drains rather than the fabric.
Rear window problems. Plastic windows cloud and crack. Glass windows can separate from the fabric.
Power top faults. On power-top models, slow or stuck tops can come from the hydraulic or electrical side. We diagnose before replacing parts. See convertible top repair.
Fabric wear. Tops wear where they fold and where they contact the frame.
Restoring a classic VW?
If you're restoring a classic Beetle cabriolet, the top and interior should be planned together so colors and materials match. We do both in the same shop. See classic car interiors.
Vinyl or cloth?
Volkswagen convertibles have used both vinyl and cloth tops depending on era and market. We'll show you samples at the estimate and help you choose, whether you're staying original or upgrading.
Whether you stay vinyl or switch to cloth, many VW tops we install use Haartz fabric. We'll show you what fits your Beetle or Cabrio.
Planning your top replacement
- Installation takes 8 to 12 hours of shop time and isn't a same-day job.
- Classic Beetle tops may take additional time depending on frame and padding work. We'll set expectations after we see the car.
- Spring is busy. Book early if you want the car ready for the first warm weekends and VW shows.
Care tips
- Fold the top carefully, especially in cold weather, and never fold it wet for long.
- Keep drains clear on models that have them.
- Clean with products made for your top material.
- Follow the break-in instructions we give you after a new top.
Bought a project Beetle?
Project Beetles often come with tops that have been patched, replaced with the wrong style, or stored folded for years. We'll inspect what's there and tell you what can be saved, especially the frame, before you order parts.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work on classic air-cooled Beetle convertibles?
Yes. Classic Beetle cabriolets are a favorite. Their padded tops have several layers, and fitting them well takes experience. Our online catalog also lists parts for classic Beetles.
My New Beetle convertible top leaks. Is it the top or the seals?
Leaks are often caused by weatherstripping or window alignment, not the top fabric. We inspect and water-test to find the source before recommending a new top.
Can I get a glass rear window?
It depends on the model and the top you choose. We'll show you the options available for your Volkswagen.
