Boat Upholstery in the Off-Season: A Guide for Chicago-Area Boaters
Our boating season is short, and every warm weekend counts. The last thing you want in May is to discover cracked seats, a moldy cushion, or a torn bimini, and then find out every upholstery shop is booked. The fix is simple: do your upholstery and canvas work in the off-season. At Don's Auto Interiors & Tops in Alsip, we've done marine upholstery for decades, and here's the plan we recommend.
Why the off-season is the right time
- Shorter waits. Fall and winter are quieter, so work gets scheduled sooner.
- No lost boating time. Your boat isn't in the water anyway.
- Time for the full job. If we find rotted seat bases or wet foam once a seat is open, there's time to fix it properly.
- Ready for launch. Everything is done before the spring rush.
Step 1: Inspect before you winterize
Before the boat goes into storage, walk through it and note:
- Seats and cushions: cracks, split seams, faded vinyl, soft spots
- Seat bases: do they flex, or are screws pulling out? That points to rotted wood.
- Foam: do cushions squish water or smell musty?
- Carpet: mildew, stains, or fraying
- Canvas: torn seams, broken snaps, sticking zippers, cloudy windows
Take photos. They make it easy to get an estimate.
Step 2: Remove and label
Most removable seats, cushions, and canvas can come off the boat:
- Photograph each piece in place before removal.
- Label each piece with its location (for example, "port bow cushion").
- Bag and label the hardware for each seat.
- Watch for wiring in seats with speakers, lights, or storage.
For pontoon boats, see our tips on pontoon boat seats.
Step 3: Clean and dry
Whether or not a piece is coming in for work:
- Clean vinyl with a marine vinyl cleaner.
- Let everything dry completely before storing.
- Store cushions indoors in a dry, ventilated place, not in sealed plastic bags.
Step 4: Bring pieces in for repair
Bring the pieces that need work to the shop over the fall or winter. Typical off-season jobs:
- Seat and cushion reupholstery in marine-grade vinyl
- Foam replacement for waterlogged cushions
- Wood base repair or replacement
- Canvas repair: snaps, zippers, seams, and windows
- New covers and bimini tops (these may need a visit to the boat for fitting)
See boat upholstery and boat covers and canvas.
Step 5: Think about matching
If only some seats need work, remember that new vinyl may not match seats that have faded over many summers. Some owners recover everything for a uniform look. Others do the most visible pieces first and the rest later. There's no wrong answer, just make the choice knowingly.
Step 6: Plan carpet and canvas together
If you're doing seats, it's a good time to consider marine carpet and canvas. Coordinating colors across seats, canvas, and carpet gives the boat a finished look.
Winter cover tips
- Support the cover so snow and water don't pool.
- Ventilate to prevent mildew under the cover.
- Secure tie-downs against winter wind.
A simple off-season calendar
| When | What | |---|---| | At haul-out | Inspect, photograph, remove cushions and canvas | | Late fall | Bring pieces in for estimates and repairs | | Winter | Repairs, new covers, and fittings | | Early spring | Pick up and reinstall before launch |
Don't wait on soft seat bases
If a seat base flexes or screws won't hold, don't put it off until spring. Rotted wood gets worse with every freeze-thaw cycle, and a seat that comes loose on the water is a safety problem.

Frequently asked questions
When should I bring my boat seats in for reupholstery?
Right after haul-out in the fall, or anytime over the winter. Waiting until spring means competing with every other boater who wants their boat ready for Memorial Day.
Should I store cushions in the boat over the winter?
If you can, remove cushions and store them somewhere dry and ventilated. Cushions left under a cover all winter can trap moisture and grow mildew.
Can canvas be repaired in the winter?
Yes. Removable canvas like enclosures, biminis, and covers can be brought in for repairs over the winter, which is one of the easiest times to get it done.
